Every video game has a hero: a singular entity who drives the action as well as the fun. In the Halo universe, that hero is the fan. A fan base of millions has helped make Halo the first-person-shooter against which all others are judged, pushing game and merchandise sales to unprecedented heights.
To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the release of the first Halo game, Xbox issued a re-mastered edition of the ever-popular original called Halo Combat Evolved: Anniversary. Complementing the release, POP created an HTML5 digital marketing experience to celebrate the fans that made the game so successful—a “living monument” to the game and its fans.
A Living Monument
Taking the form of Halo’s protagonist Master Chief, the Living Monument offers fans an opportunity to share in their passion, connect with other like-minded players and join a community dedicated to the game. Working with raw models and key assets, POP created a larger-than-life 3D Master Chief, completely rotational and covered in a digital mosaic comprised entirely of user-generated content.
Leave Your Mark
Xbox and POP envisioned a collaborative space where fans are encouraged to share personal tributes to the game. Each fan is assigned a unique marker on the monument and can also share his or her tribute across social channels. The experience memorializes fans' fierce dedication to the game and embodies the spirit of the Halo community.
A Fitting Salute
Fans enthusiastically took their place in Halo history. They uploaded thousands of images of themselves, their avatars, favorite Halo screenshots, original video, tattoos and even wedding photos. Each image fills a space in the mosaic of the monument and appears in a personalized video. Working in partnership with 215 Studios, POP integrated each fan’s contribution into a gripping Halo Anniversary HTML5 video. Master Chief would definitely approve.
