When Major League Soccer launched in 1996, it jumped feet first into a highly cultivated landscape of sports fans, stadiums and sponsorships. Despite the challenges inherent in introducing an unproven sport (at least in the U.S.) into an already crowded marketplace, the league has nearly doubled in size, with 19 clubs now playing in the U.S. and Canada. And the community of fans cheering them on has exploded as well, thanks to MLS’s efforts to put a world-class product on the field.
