Windows 8 Surface App

MLS

When Major League Soccer launched in 1996, it jumped feet first into a highly cultivated landscape of sports fans, stadiums and sponsorships. Despite the challenges inherent in introducing an unproven sport (at least in the U.S.) into an already crowded marketplace, the league has nearly doubled in size, with 19 clubs now playing in the U.S. and Canada. And the community of fans cheering them on has exploded as well, thanks to MLS’s efforts to put a world-class product on the field.

A Win-Win

Like Major League Soccer, Microsoft is also facing a mature marketplace filled with tough competition. Microsoft’s release of the Surface tablet will be the latest battle in the long war between Microsoft and Apple, with the fight taking place on both the desktop and tablet. Armed with a truly revolutionary product, Microsoft is inspiring brands to create experiences for their new OS and hardware. The potential is massive: unlike apps designed for iOS or Android, apps designed for Windows 8 will be available for the Surface tablet as well as for more than 300 million customers running Windows on the desktop of their PC.

All MLS, All the Time

Recognizing the opportunity, Major League Soccer wanted to get in on the ground floor of Windows 8's considerable reach, so the league asked POP to create an app for the emerging platform. MLS already had developed a Windows Phone app with POP—so it knew its audience wanted a lineup of fresh, up-to-date content daily. Working closely with the team at Microsoft, POP leveraged its experience with Metro, Microsoft’s innovative new design language, to create an MLS experience unique to the Windows 8 environment. The result was an app that allowed fans to watch rich video content on their tablets and PCs, read daily news updates and keep score with a live tracker of each week’s games and results.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!

Launched with the beta release of Windows 8, the MLS app was the first dedicated to a single sport in the marketplace, benefiting from the buzz around the new platform’s release and making content available to soccer fans using Windows 8 devices, including Microsoft’s new Surface tablet.
